Currently, there is a supposed "wine war" between China and Australia. Australian wine is usually sold to the Chinese market, where a large and growing middle class means great demand for Australian wine - and China is their largest export market. But, hundreds of Australian vineyards, who normally make a living by selling to China, are currently being hit by a strict tax imposed on Australian wine prices in China, resulting in fewer bottles being sold. In fact, the number of Chinese orders for Australian wine was close to zero in December 2020. China has set up the trade barrier to protect local Chinese winemakers so they can sell more wine in their home country, but in Australia, it is speculated that it has to do with the already strained relations between China and Australia. What do you think about the tactic of imposing high taxes on imported goods, in order to protect its own economy?

  What is the reason why Chinese would prefer to buy Australian wines?

  It is both good and bad. I can understand that China wants to support their local community, but the Chinese people should also be allowed to choose. People have different tastes. And this now puts pressure on Australia. I really wish countries would be more accommodating of each other and come to a compromise without negatively affecting one another.
