The President of Turkmenistan erected a 6-metre-tall gilded statue in honour of his favourite breed of dog. The statue was inaugurated by Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and depicts an Alabai dog. The monument is located in a residential area for state employees in the capital Ashgabat. This is not the first time Berdymukhamedov has expressed his admiration for this dog breed. A book dedicated to the Alabai breed was released last year. Despite the size of the monument, the majority of Turkmenistan's population lives in poverty. Would you agree that such a statue be erected?

  As a person from a nation that has statues of animals I cannot object to another nation doing the same. I believe the dog breed is particularly important to that nation, so it probably makes more sense to them than our statues of lions.
