If he has a passion and knowledge maybe. I mean Trump surprised everyone by actually having knowledge from business world he applied to Presidency. (The US used to pay the largest contribution to UN than all other nations paid, so he reduced it to be equitable.) He also stopped giving free military presence in other countries who paid nothing in return for the services. Makes economic sense!

As J4564482K and farside1 said. Also, Clint Eastwood was Mayor of Carmel for many years. I suspect that these are the exceptions that prove the rule though ;)

What j456448k said, and there's Arnold Swartznegger who wound up as a Governor. Trump had no political experience, is a disaster - and President. However West is too late to sign up in a number of states, making it very unlikely, and like many, I think this was just PR for his latest record.

Ronald Reagan, President of the United States from 1981 to 1989, was an actor for over 25 years, prior to becoming Governor of California, then standing for the President of the United States. So, yes, someone from show business can become an effective politician. :)
