Are criminals' punishments harsh enough?
Closed

I generally think criminals do not get harsh enough punishments, but that could just be because the media will only report on cases where there is a lenient sentence handed down. Althoguh it would be unrealistic to punish everyone with long sentences as the prisons will always be overflowing.

The prisons already are overflowing but sentencing does not seem to follow any rhyme or reason.

You have to be joking? The little darlings get so many privileges they never want to leave prisons. Hard labour and no pay or rewards would be better than the soft options of today.Crime does pay as we know to our cost and th9ngs will get worse as the police forces are reduced.

No I don't think they are in some cases. I find it hard to understand when I see headlines like: Paedophile given 16 months for abusing kids and then right underneath it will say fraudster given 5 years for stealing ££££'s from employer/ friend/ whatever. That is just wrong! It's all a bit skewed.

Some are not harsh, some aren't harsh enough. Rape, murder -> should be the worst punishments ever! Things like drug charges -> really, if you aren't harming anyone, then it should not be that bad! Jail time for having some weed on you? Get real! Hah. But soem things definitely should be having harsher punishments, for sure!

In my opinion the only way that we will ever return our country to a semblance of civilised behaviour is by ensuring that those who cross the line are made as miserable as possible. I do not accept that prisons are primarilly a place of rehabilitation but are a place of punishment! Until we ensure that prisons are a place of fear where people are frightened of going, certainly returning then the standards of this country will continue to slide. We urgently need policies of deterrant.

No, I don't think they are harsh enough, I remember watching a T.V. programme about prisoners once, and one of them saying, that they deliberately commit a crime to get back inside, where they have no bills to pay, free food, and entertainment put on. Maybe this is why they are overflowing, saying that, I do think we need more prisons, we could have some like Alcatraz,on an island somewhere. I think the shortage of prisons is partly the reason for the lenient sentences. Also I feel that crimes against women and children are never taken so seriously, is this because the majority of judges are men?.

I know of someone who has just got out of jail for what i consider a shocking crime, he had tv, playstation, etc they are just not punished enough for the crimes they commit, its no wonder half of them end up back inside, what worries have they got while in there? They have no bills, fed 4 times a day, dont have to be cold in winter. They can even get a degree for free, what kind of country do we live in ??

Historically in our beloved country crimes agains the person have been considered less important than crimes against property hence the awful history we have in relation to punishing rapists and child related sex crimes. what does that say about us as a society?

I don't think the issue is really the amount of time, but the experience prisoners have when they're there........I think time, should be hard time, no tv, no PS3s, basic nutritional food, unpaid work......I'd have them digging ditches or whatever the equivalent of sewing mailbags is.....
Keep them busy definately, but no home comforts. To me prison is punishment not rehabilitation, that comes afterwards.
