WHY ARE VIDEO GAMES SO EXPENSIVE?

My son is presently pestering me to buy a new Xbox 360 game- Halo Reach- and I have just gone on line to check prices - the cheapest is £30+ and I was just thinking why are they so expensive.
I have now picked up the newspaper and read that this game is due to be the highest grossing game released by the manufacturing company and is likely to make £150 million on the first day of release! more money than Avatar the movie took.
I dont know much about making video games but I would have thought that once you have the basic computer programme for characters and back grounds etc the rest was comparatively easy after all this is one in a series of games made not a new idea that has had to be manufactured.
If anyone know why the cost is so much please let me know.
Oh by the way he tells me Call of Duty Black Ops is also coming out soon and he would quite like that and that costs £40+!!

It does take quite a lot of money and effort to make these games. you have to pay out for everything and if there are mistakes you pay for that too. then you have to hope the game is successful or you make no money. on this occassion it is clear that they will make a large profit on this game but the old adage of "Why charge someone £5 when they will pay £10 ". they know the game will be successful and in big demand so charge a high price and dare parents not to buy it. how many parents will not buy what their little one wants for Christmas and risk seeing a sad little face on what shuld be the happiest day of the year?.

Well games do take a long time to make. On average they can be more than 3 years. If you work hard and long on something wouldnt you like a good bit of money?

well i think games are alrite price if its a good game but u gotta thionk how many ppl go into making a game jus 1 level can go thru a team of 10 ppl then there advertising and scripts to write publishing the game cost to put on to disc and most of the consoles are sold at a loss and they make profit on there software (games) also try looking on ebay and other sites with offers on some places like tesco do a special price on games on there 1st day of release

i know tricia! they are so expensive and its like child blackmail! i think its because of the work that goes in to making the games ... but thats no excuse is it? i believe the manufacturers are making toooooo much profit and should be taken to task...after all they are kids games and after no time at all they have grown out of them and want something else! sometimes friends go halves and share ... but then that creates arguments too doesnt it? t/c

Because everyone wants them and are eager to buy them especially if they're new.

Or you could suggest he get off of his butt and start washing cars and pays for it himself. You aren't his bank and you aren't made of money. When we wanted something we earned the money, and when I moved here to Britain the boy down the street washed cars to earn the money for all that he wanted, and he never was broke. Mind you, he did a great job on alloy wheels and all the men hired him and tipped him extra because of it. I don't know why games cost so much, I won't have them in the house. I don't have kids, though, so no one actually complains about that.

I think the price of some of the games are ridiculouse and although I dont condone it, I'm not suprised some people chip their machines and use copied games
