shortbread - plain flour or self-raising?
Closed

hi, my son and i were watching a programme this morning and they were making shortbread. my son(he's almost 4) now wants us to bake some shortbread - i kind of know what to do but do we use plain flour or self-raising flour? if anyone has a recipe that'd be great. we're a dab hand at scones and fairy cakes but shortbread is a new thing to us!!

I suppose you will have the advice you need now. I have not made any short bread since I broke my wrist in March. I love shortbread so when you have made some I will have a piece if there is any going spare. Virtual of course.

No idea I'm afraid - I am a walking disaster in the kitchen hence the reason why my partner does all of the cooking lol

Sorry have no idea which is the better one to use. Never made short bread. Hope you managed to get some made in the end.

Its all a matter of what you are doing with it. I prefer plain in our bread maker when we are churning the loaves out.

I honestly have no idea whatsoever! I don't bake as I am absolutely useless at anything cooking related. Hope you have solved the mystery

This recipe is out of the Be-Ro book which I always use. 9oz Plain flour, 3oz Castor sugar, 6oz butter. Mix flour and sugar in a bowl, rub in butter. Knead well to form a smooth paste. Roll out. Bake in oven 160c 325f gas mark 3 for 30 minuts.

wow - thanks - i'm quite glad its self raising as i've already got that in the cupboard - if it needed plain i would have had to have gone shopping! i think the melted chocolate at the end will go down a treat!! thanks

175g of self raising flour
50g of sugar
100g of butter
Once mad dip one end in a little melted milk chocolate - yum
Caramel Shortbread is a good one to make when hes a bit older, really messy but very rewarding!
