Slow hand claps.

I rather enjoy watching a competitive game of tennis but fail to see why spectators persist in supplying a slow hand clap when a player disputes a line call and it goes the Hawkeye to visually supply the decision on whether a ball was in or out of play.

I don't mind a spontaneous Mexican wave or applause/cheers but to me these slow hand claps are atmosphere sapping and boring.

Occasionally if 2 or 3 line calls come in quick succession I'll turn the channel over as it puts my teeth on edge.

Commentators say it allows fans to participate in the game and feel part of the action as normally they have to stay quiet while the game is being played . Personally I just can't see the attraction of the slow hand clap.

What do you think of the slow hand clap in tennis ?

I don't watch tennis Alan but it sounds really naff to me as most "bandwagon" behaviour usually is. It reminds me of the hideous "clapping" for the NHS during lockdown. Reply

Luckily, I don't watch a lot of tennis ~ I may catch a few minutes if I go to speak with the old Dragon in her TV lounge ! Reply

Maybe a bit annoying, but compared most crowds tennis watchers are better behaved by quite a distance, I would say. Reply

i'm guessing there's a simple explanation Alan . They don't do it to " their " player . Reply

Last game I watched was Raducanu at US Open. May start peeking as the final approaches but its the grunting that gets me Reply
