Taking the money and run
Closed

My friend of 20 odd year passed away just over a week ago. I phoned my pastor last night to find out about the funeral , I know she wanted a Christian funeral .
It seems her family could care less apparently they have told the funeral directors to cremate her and do what they will with her ashes. I know she left at least £5000. To cover the cost. It seems this family who didn't really bother much with her when she was here have taken her money for themselves. My pastor is very upset and so am I I know she loved flowers I used to buy her them often (I'm so glad I did that) she was the kindest most honest person I have had the pleasure of knowing.
How can people be so calous and uncaring. I'm really shocked about the whole thing.
It has made me think about my own impending demise, I'm going to write down what I want for that, I'm going to make a short video too, I do trust my family mind you, I'm close to my kids, but my instructions will be left with my pastor.
Have you made your will and left instructions.

Do you think the instructions left after someone's passing for their funeral arrangements should be legally binding to ensure they are respected?

While I agree that the deceased's wishes should be accommodated where possible, I also feel that £5000 is better spent on the living than on a funeral director's profits. I am sure your family will follow your wishes, but I doubt that your pastor would have any authority to over-ride their decision should it differ. Anyway, let's hope that's a long way away.

It’s a shame the family are not following her wishes.
We have a friend passed away last week and we are going to her funeral on Monday. I was speaking to her husband this week and he was explaining that they have arranged a humanist funeral as that is what she wanted. It is difficult for him as a minister’s son it doesn’t feel right. However he has acknowledged that the wishes of his late wife take priority. He has also told us all to wear bright colours as that is what she wanted. She was an artist and colour was so important to her.

All done Rose . The old saying comes to mind - you can choose your friends , but not your family .

This is something i am in the process of looking into at the moment ,you can be for a funeral upfront at the moment ,but you are not yet protected ,until June this year where it will become law ,a will is a bit important and you need to get it right ,my solicitor is doing them for £198 but you can get it cheaper ,in fact there are a few charities that will do a free will for a £40 donation ,and you can do some online ones for £20 ,but i am not sure how legal these are ,look around Rose and make some enquirys before you deposit any money or write a will with any company

not yet, as my son is not in touch with me and I undecided until some contact has been made. If no contact is made then I am likely to leave everything to my sisters or charity or maybe even my family in holland or maybe someone local who could do with help!! Too early for me to say!!!
