Foreign Affairs Select Committee

..are giving the Permanent Under Secretary at the Foreign Office, Sir Phillip Barton, a fiery interrogation this afternoon.

Tom Tugendhat - ex-Army - is the Chair, and has been making a monumental effort to contain his fury and disgust at the "chaos" that engulfed the Foreign Office during the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban earlier this year.

Honourable mentions also to Alicia Kearns MP - who has worked in Crisis Centres at the FO before - as she asked particularly pointed and specific questions about how the FO handled the masses of calls and emails from desperate refugees....when Sir Phillip, as well as the Foreign Minister Dominic Raab, were on holiday at the time. And didn't think it was necessary for them to cut short those hols...

Sir Philip Barton has clung to a mantra of "I have reflected upon this, and if I had my time again I would have returned earlier"... Not so much appealing to those words as flinging himself at their feet.

Stewart McDonald also had a series of skewering questions about when exactly Raab left the country, to which he received the classic Sir Humphrey-ism "I'm happy to take that question away [to find the info]".

It's all quite breathtakingly complacent, and Kearns particularly is obviously having trouble containing her anger.... And the longer it goes on, the more it's clear why.

It was unforgivable they way our government handled the situation. They risked our forces and many innocent civilians.
My understanding is that a Uk website set up in August to assist those fleeing the country is still not yet active!
Next time the U.K. is asking for assistance from other countries - interpreters etc - they will not be forthcoming , and who can blame them? We have totally let down the Afghan people and our own servicemen and their families.

The Blob is squirming like rotting Tofu, will it become apparent that the directive for staff at,arguably, the most important of the offices of state,to work from home was a catastrophic one?
I am astonished to learn that, allegedly, many if not all staff refused to work beyond the rostered hours while people were either dying or likely to die in Afghanistan.

It just goes to show that it's far easier to get your country involved in a conflict than it is to extricate oneself in a dignified and considerate manner Christine. Reply

I'll never forget Tom Tugendhat's speech , what an honourable man .
Unfortunately , neither he nor anyone else will embarrass this shower , cos they don't care .
