Mandela Effect
Closed

Good morning all. Are you familiar with the Mandela Effect? It's when a lot of people remember something that never happened. It's called the 'Mandela Effect' because a lot of people remembered Nelson Mandela dying in prison in 2010. Apparently that never happened and he died in 2013. A lot of people quote 'Luke, I am your father' while it's actually 'No, I am your father'. It also seems that the witch in Snow White didn't say 'mirror mirror on the wall'. What she actually said was 'Magic Mirror On The Wall'. These are movie quotes that are remembered incorrect. It doesn't always have to be movie related of course. Lots of people remember past events that actually never happened.

I'm not sure if this happened to me now but... years ago when it first came out I watched the movie Forrest Gump. I watched it again yesterday with my daughter. I was surprised to see (spoilers!) that Lt. Dan got prosthetic legs in the end. That is not how I remember the movie at all. In my version, due to severe depression, Lt. Dan kills himself in his apartment after sending the hookers away for calling Forrest stupid. I clearly remember that scene. But it wasn't there in the movie. I was so confused that didn't happen, so I looked on Google for a change in the movie. Maybe when they released it again later they used an alternate ending or something or deleted scenes.. I have no clue.. but I can't find a single thing on the internet about Lt. Dan's suicide. I asked my husband as he watched it the first time with me years ago and he does not recall my version of the movie. I am the only one who remembers it like that very clearly and vividly.

Is this the Mandela effect now? Do I have a false memory? Did it happen like that or not? Am I from a parallel universe? Dit I somehow shift to this world instead? It's very confusing.. maybe I'm just losing my mind.. It seems there's a movie about the Mandela Effect so will see if I can watch it. Have you ever had anything like this happen before? What do you think about the Mandela Effect?

I have never seen Forrest Gump. At least, I'm pretty sure I haven't, but I could be imagining that.

I think it's poorly named as Nelson Mandela was released from prison shortly before becoming president of South Africa for a full five year term .
Anyone believing he died in prison must have been living in the woods for the past 30 years or suffering some form of delusional mental illness . As for "a lot" of people believing he died in prison , for that to be the case there must be "a lot" of ill informed and stupid people in our midst , which could be possible I suppose ! So in conclusion my opinion is that people suffering from the "Mandela effect" are either ill informed or delusional to a considerable degree.

Perhaps your mind is merging different movies, there was a colonel that committed suicide at the end of The Generals Daughter which starred John Travolta

Some years ago I was talking to a now deceased friend about a pub where we'd drank all of the pumps dry & I couldn't remember it's name.
Mick said the name & I knew that it was a different pub but I couldn't convince him otherwise.
A couple of months after he died I stumbled over the pub where it happened, I recognised it both outside & inside but although I now know it's name I still can't remember ever hearing the name used as a pub name.

I am sure it existed long before Mandela.
The only Mandela effect that I ever had was a very unpleasant phone argument with Winnie while he was still in prison.
