I live here!

Today we popped into the local town to buy a wee gift for my Mum, who is visiting tomorrow. We went into a gift shop I’ve been in many times before.
I found a beautiful little jug that I think she will like. It is decorative but functional. So I bought it.
The sales assistant kindly offered me the advice that there is a tea shop just around the corner if we
were looking for a coffee! I gaped at her in indignation and told her that I live just a couple of miles up the road!

I know what it is - as soon as I open my mouth they hear the English accent and presume I’m a tourist. I hate it and find it very patronising. I’ve lived here over 20 years, she has been in the shop 2 minutes!

I know she was trying to be helpful, but honestly if I was looking for a coffee shop I’d have asked!

I think you are totally over reacting Brucie. As you say yourself she was only trying to be helpful. Reply

Hello Brucie. We once had a shop in Torquay. Next door but one was the local Tourist Information Shop. They sent lots of people down to our shop for all sorts of things we didn’t sell (they, nor anyone else, seemed to like the local competition to us !). We thought they were wonderful. Although they didn’t know all our stock, they were trying to join us into their local community. We could help some customers, though not all. We tried our best, and met some wonderful people. Please do not be quite so hard on people who might be from your local area. Tourists, hopefully, sometimes, spend money ! Reply

I concur with the ladies below Brucie. I think it was a topical suggestion due to the teapot purchase, I would have just asked her for a kettle of hot water Reply

Why get so upset about it, I have lived in Cornwall for over 30 years but still have a Londonish accent, even though I'm not a Londoner, I just lived there for a while and picked it up. If someone here didn't know me and was trying to be polite, as they are trained to be, I would just point out the fact, politely, that I was local and knew what was what. I have worked in hospitallity and retail, both are difficult jobs which is not helped by people who are hostile so think twice before you gat angry, put yourself in their place, you don't know them and they don't know you.;-) Reply

I think you might be over-reacting, she was just being friendly and welcoming. Reply
