London

Sorry pic wrong way! I took this photo in 1962 from the top of The Monument at Billingsgate it was built to commemorate the great fire of London in 1666 I think? I dont think it was equipped with a lift, the reason I posted it was something Chris mentioned about the post office tower, i can't find that photo but there are no sky scrapers in this one and somehow London seems peaceful! Has anybody else climbed this monument or maybe another in the capital? My youngest son went up the Shard, I won't make it to London again too long a train journey now.

We 'did' that visit to the Monument on a primary school ( probably weekend ~1965 ) outing, there were a lot of steps which we were all expected to count, but strangely I forget the exact number :), no lift service. Your photo is taken facing West-North-West... The nascent GPO / PO tower is projecting two-thirds of the way along the long concrete building to the right of St Pauls Cathedral, it's more clearly visible when one rotates, zooms and sharpens :). British Telecom's closely guarded official film documentary about the tower is here :

Further over to the right of your vista is a black spire and I've been trying to establish which of several churches all in the same proximity it might be. Now pretty sure It's St Lawrence Jewry.

I’ve not climbed any tall buildings in London except Tate Modern’s viewing platform but that is not hugely tall!
