Savings
Closed

Have you ever saved for something that you never actually managed to buy? Maybe because it was always just unattainable or life just got in the way of your aim?
I needed to save £600 for what would have been the holiday of a lifetime in the early 1960s and I had £500 so was getting there. Egypt and the Valley of the Kings was within my sight, my family needed to borrow it ! Dream over, but one of my children went there. I've just watched a programme that's what reminded me.

I'm a saver, and find it hard to spend money willy nilly I would hate to be in debt and hope I've got enough to see me thru old age without having to go to a 'don't care home'

Life has tended to get in the way of most things for me, dreaming is all I really have left.

I saved to pay my mortgage off early and achieved it 8 years ahead of the term agreed!

I tend to save for things I am more likely to actually be able to buy, such as saving up to change my car. I have never been well-off, and unlikely to ever be, so I'm careful with funds. I enjoy saving anyway. I feel guilty when I spend money!

Model railway locos at one of our local toy shops - the one that had specialised in original Hornby Dublo stock just after they hit dire straits in '65. A deposit toward one was made with the promise of more soon, it was put to one side for a few weeks.
.
Then by the time I had more toward it, - overshot deadline - the thing had found it's way back to the display cabinet and been sold. Then the same thing happened with a second, then a third.
.
My money just didn't accumulate fast enough to secure any of three classic examples ( a diecast Deltic Diesel, a tinplate S.R. EMU and a 'Black Five' steam engine ).
.
Later I had been saving for a Barbados holiday, deposited half, then came across a bargain priced bundle - a colour video recorder and TV monitor for sale from Proops Bros' shop in Tottenham Court Road - they were just begging to come home with me in a black taxi ! ..What can you do ? 1977 that was...

I was brought up to save for something I wanted or do without.
