Thunder storms and lightning strikes

Do you have any lightning strike stories to share?

We have had a few thunderstorms here in Surrey today and to try to keep the little one calm i told her about the science of it all and did the old counting between the light and the sound.

I personally get really nervous in them and i always have. One of my old flats got struck one time and it blew up our TV and while i was at college our main building was struck. We all saw it from the canteen and the whole campus lost power for about an hour or so. The worst story though was to do with my great grandfather who was heading out to the outside loo during a storm . My pregnant great grandmother watching from the window when she saw him get struck and sent her into premature labour with my nan. Thankfully they all survived and welcomed my nan into the world a number of hours later.

I heard the thunder but did not notice the lightning flashes, which was odd given how dark it had become. I think the counting between the flashes and the thunder was a great idea. Even if the wee ones still jump, it is more like a game. :-)
.
I once had a lightning strike hit close enough that it maimed my first PC. I was using it at the time a got a small jolt via the mouse, but the PC itself had a few bits melt and the plug fuse blew. I got the PC repaired back to a semi-usable state, while I saved up for a new one, but first I bought anti-surge plug extentions! :-)
