Classical music

I understand that a lot of my posts recently have been all doom and gloom and serious so I thought I would post a more light-hearted topic! :-)

Since I play the violin, I'm a big fan of classical music. Me and my electric guitar and heavy metal obsessed friend used to laugh about our different tastes in music (although she did introduce me to some great songs, such as Bohemian rhapsody).

My favourite pieces of music are Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the Toreador Song from the opera Carmen.

What do you think of Classical music? If you aren't a fan, what genres do you prefer?

I had Prokofiev's Symphonies 1 and 2 playing in the car today (the latter is admittedly heavy going), and earlier, at home, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and La Damnation de Faust. Does that answer your question? Reply

Except for opera which hurts my ears I listen to all sorts of music but most of my classical music is on vinyl so I can't listen to it since my wife wrecked my stereo set up.
I hope to see Aaron Copland's "Billy the kid" one day & thinking about it, I have quite a bit of ballet music in the library. Reply

Hail, fellow, well met ... I've loved classical music since I was a child. My grandmother taught me the first rudiments of the piano, sufficiently to persuade my parents that professional lessons wouldn't be a total waste of time and money, and I soon became obsessed... Took up clarinet and tenor recorder in big school, joined the School orchestra, choir, brass band, set up an Early Music recorder group with my friends, and won First Place in my school piano competition in my final year at school.
Probably due to my preferences for playing Early, Renaissance and Baroque music whilst I still played piano, recorder, etc, my favourite composer is Purcell; but I also adore certain Romantic/Early Contemporary composers, like Puccini, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky... as well as others including Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Britten, Sibelius, and other earlies like Hildegard of Bingen, von Wolkenstein, Josquin de Pres, Palestrina, Gesualdo, Dufay, and our old Early favourite, "Anon." ;) lol xx Reply

I like a lot of different Genres, from classical to pop Including folk, brass bands, Military bands, and dare I say the bagpipes. There is a story around the bagpipes, that I may post at some point. I like the four seasons, and the toreador song. One thing about classical music is that it is very adaptable, and it has inspired a lot of pop music since the 1960s. Think of Bohemian Rhapsody, and some of its lyrics. My favourite piece of classical is Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture. The opening parts of Beethoven's fifth were used during the D-Day invasion, it let the resistance groups know that the invasion was on. Reply

I'm not a big opera fan but I like lots of different styles of classical music, Renaissance, Baroque and 20th century, Holst's The Planets suite is probably my favourite.;-) Reply
