Where are all the Snails going?

Last night in the torrential rain so many snails were out - and I had to dodge them all to stop killing so many.
Admittedly I did kill a few but it was unintentional and I said I was sorry - as I didn't manage to spot them all.

My question to you is this - where are they all going?
What is their purpose if not tasty meals for birds and other animals.

They are heading off to the shoe store to buy one wellington boot each. Sadly, they move so slowly the never make it before the rain stops otherwise they could pull it out of their shell and put it on and splash in puddles! ;-)
.
On a more serious note, in light rain I would expect snails to just be out looking/sniffing for food but in heavy rain they seem to want to climb up out of it. I often see them half way up my garden wall, waiting out the downpour.

I think they come to my house. I get 100s of them around my house.I end up on tiptoes so I don't accidently crush them. Reply

They will be somewhere cool, and damp waiting for the next drop of rain, so they can get out again to feed. Reply

When no rain if they've good sense in shallow holes waiting for dew to form early A.M. then breakfast, morning constitutional and back in their hole. A bit like Chris on his non-charity-shop days ! ;). Reply

Slugs and snails are very important. They provide food for all sorts of mammals, birds, slow worms, earthworms, insects and they are part of the natural balance, they also help clear up garden debris. All in all they do more good than harm.;-) Reply
