Green Grant

When i heard the government's announcement about grants for green improvements to homes I wondered who would qualify and what measures would be included? We have a home with central heating, double glazing and insulation in walls and loft but the double glazing is really quite old and some of the windows need replacing. Our income is under £20.000 per annum and I wondered if we would qualify for the full grant to replace some windows? Do you think this grant will help you?

Double glazed units and misting, are someone else's money spinner.
.
Inheriting mostly classic 'thin' aluminium d/g window frames has caused us/me some ongoing replacement expense, though condensation to large extent is hidden by net curtains. UPVC d/g is otoh much less burglar proof, sealed glazed units can be easily popped out from outside the property, so I don't want them.
.
Secondary 'glazing', lovely and cheap, by acrylic panels and nylon clips to wooden frames makes a lot of sense to me where poss., the air gap thermal insulation is very good and the plastics sheet can be removed and stored somewhere safe ( wrapped in polythene with it's U-section edging strips still attached ) during summer. There are also ways and means to accomodate fanlight openings using custom home-fitted battens cut to fit if desired...
.
Full curtains I still use in summer as part-drawn heat regulators, some are lined, some not... So I'm pretty happy with what I have.

Living where we do is akin to living in a field. All the windows need replacing, as do two doors. Draughty just isn't the word. Reply

I expect this scheme to be a con, probably wanting people to install those horrid eco boilers Reply

These things usually have a catch, you have to use 'approved' installers which going by previous schemes were often cowboys who did rushed shoddy jobs, so I doubt I'd use it as I like to use my own tradesmen. Also expect a deluge of cold calling, there will be so many scammers rubbing their hands over this. The scheme is available to landlords, and homeowners, the government pay at least two thirds of any energy saving work up to £5,000. You can claim for a new boiler, wall insulation, loft insulation, energy saving light bulbs, and double glazing. They have not set out any figures, but they say those on the lowest incomes will not have to pay anything, and can get up to £10,000. The work will have to be carried out by an approved supplier, I was not able to find a list last night. But I expect that there will be the normal round of cold calling by installers, offering the service. There may be more information released next week, so do a search online, you may be able to find more information. Reply

It would be nice if we did get a grant for our windows -apart from the winter heating allowance and my husband's bus pass we've never had any benefits or state help ever. Reply
