#TolunaNews | A newborn was treated with cannabis and saved
Closed

A first for the UK - a baby was born on the 11th March at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) and was first baby in the world to receive cannabis therapy. Since his health was not good, his parents decided to try the treatment.

The study is the first step in what researchers say could one day lead to a cannabis-derived drug being commonly used in neonatal care to help babies at risk for seizures and brain damage.

Oscar was born unexpectedly in less than optimal conditions and had to be transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit. His mother, Chelsea Parodi, said that although it was a difficult decision, she wanted to do everything she could to help her little boy. The boy was in the hospital for nine days and was monitored 24 hours a day.

Prof. Paul Clarke, a neonatologist consultant at NNUH, said there was a lot of emotion in the neonatal intensive care unit: “This is the first time a cannabis-derived drug has been tested intravenously in human children. It is hoped that it will be good for preventing seizures and protecting the brains of newborns.

One of the reasons that persuades parents to try this treatment is the careful brain monitoring that babies receive as part of the study. This gives parents greater confidence that any problem will be solved early on, rather than being detected later.

What do you think about this?

Do you think that cannabis should be legalised across the world, or should it be used only in special medical cases?

Let us know what you think in the comments!

One simple question darthcynic. Is cannabis, and I believe it has been, helpful for people with certain medical conditions and should be legalised. Would you condone the prescription of any cannabis based medication. How confident are you that modern “artificial” versions of herbal medicines are effective? One wrong bond in the chemical structure can be devastating.
