Gender neutral school uniform.

I have a Board of Governers meeting next week via skype (should be interesting as I will get to see inside the others homes!) One of the topics up for discussion/vote is a proposed change to our uniform policy. At present female pupils may wear a skirt or trousers as part of their uniform and male pupils only trousers. The change would mean that all pupils could wear either. In the interests of equality I will be voting in favour of it. You thoughts?

I think it’s a great idea. I honestly don’t see why anyone should have a problem with it. No one is forcing them to wear skirt/trousers, but if there’s only one option and they’re uncomfortable wearing that option, then that’s surely where the problem is? I work in an industry where we can wear whatever we like to work, I don’t see why children shouldn’t have that option at school too Reply

I feel as if students should feel free to express themselves within the rules of school uniform so I believe that this is a positive step forwards Reply

To be honest, I think it’s distracting. Although as adults we don’t see anything wrong with boys wearing skirts, kids will.especially since kids are so cruel I think rather than expressing themselves, children will start to refrain from wearing items against their traditional ones because they see the reaction they’ll get (most likely negative). I don’t think our society is that open minded yet and boys who start to wear skirts won’t be treated like their peers. Reply

I hope that all of the boys turn up in skirts, and demand to use the girls toilets and the girls all turn up in trousers and demand to use the boys toilets, what would your board do then, yes the lunatics have taken control!!!! Reply

Other than traditional values, there is no reason why boys cannot wear skirts if they want to. This idea would mainly be beneficial to pupils who are questioning their gender identity as they Will not be told what they SHOULD be. Reply

I remember a young lad fairly recently, who wore a skirt to school , and was sent home ! They didn't know how to react , so did what comes naturally ! By the way , I'm all for school uniform, everyone's equal that way . Good post Ed . Reply

There would seem to be quite a bit of talk on here about boys wearing skirts / dresses. However I think the uniform should never be trousers for all. At a certain time of the month, some girls can get particularly embarrassed if they think that anything bulky could show through their clothes. This would surely seem to be a very powerful reason for at least retaining a choice of skirts for the girls. Reply

Re- seeing inside other people's homes - should have been a TV engineer; free tea, biscuits, beer, even dinner sometimes ! ;). Re- dress, I do not really understand why universal smocks went out of favour here and - given thriving celtic tradition - kilts are very appropriate. Your decision is wise imo. Reply
