Should public transit be free?

Kansas City, MO will soon be the largest U.S. city to offer free public transit on their light rail and buses. I support this in concept if the transit is user friendly and it helps get significantly more cars off the roads.

The problem I see is that a big reason most American commuters do not use public transit is lack of convenience. In Kansas City, only 1.2% of residents commute on public transit and I cannot see this figure increasing much even if it were free. Their buses only run every 30-60 minutes and frequently do not take passengers where they need to go.

I believe Kansas City and other cities considering free fare should focus on improving service first. Make sure the buses and rail run every 5-10 minutes as they do in the larger U.S. cities and buses should have better coverage throughout the city.

Great idea but where will the money come from to do maintenance and keep up the transit system. I really doubt that people will quit driving their personal vehicles to get on some free transportation that’s falling apart because their is no income to keep them up. Reply
