Is it ok for a company to not reimburse an employee if the meal contains meat?

Good morning all. A property developer company made a new policy for their employees to go vegetarian. Though they will not force people to give up meat, they also will no longer reimburse meals if it contains any meat products. If someone wants to eat meat then it's ok but the company won't pay for it while they will still reimburse meals which are vegetarian /vegan. This in order to tackle climate change. The company owner states that there are exceptions: when you're gluten intolerance you can eat meat and if there's no veggie option you can eat meat. But what if you really just don't LIKE veggies?

I think this is wrong. I think your company can have the request for people to go vegetarian / vegan but should not punish those who do not wish to do so by not reimbursing them for the meat they wish to eat. It's not so simple for everyone to go veggie. I have never eaten much vegetables in my life as I loathe the taste of it. Most children refuse to eat veggies but eat them later in life. This never happened to me. Never ate them as a child and never eat them now. What's more, I don't think my body accepts it. I did try many times to eat veggies but they give my stomach pain and do not digest at all. Carrots and tomatoes are ok but that's about it. Should I live on carrots and tomatoes alone then? Should I starve?
Do you think it's a fair policy?

I’ve been a vegetarian most of my life and that is a decision I got to make. I have always found that people should make their own decisions on wether they want to eat meat or not. Seriously hope that the employees don’t accept things like this as I would accept it if my work said that they would reimburse my veggie meal. Reply

I would like to think an employee of this company takes them to a tribunal for discrimination ! I think that is wrong it is up to the individual to make the chose to be meat free not eh employer ! Reply

I’m sure it will end up in court as it is discriminatory! Imagine if they had said they would not reimburse vegans or veggies... Reply

It's wrong to force anyone to do things that they don't want to do. Reply

As a beef farmer's wife No; but also how much of the veg is transported across the world? A large part of the veg we eat at this time of the year is imported; even during the summer/autumn a good part is still imported, so how does eating veg & fruit from Guatemala, Spain, Mexico wherever; help combat global warming, and I do try to buy locally produced food as often as I can, but I have to admit to wanting the odd treat of sweetcorn and sugarsnap peas, and for making my stews stretch celery to add to the local onions, turnip, carrot and meat Reply

Recruitment will dwindle, their stock price will fluctuate wildly and business collapse will follow within several years - unless they're Herbalife or some such eccentric concern :). Reply
