Following a landmark decision by the European Council, all cars must be able to be fitted with breathalysers from 2022.

The technology that could prevent drink-drivers from starting their engines, was approved in March and has now received final approval after politicians voted on it earlier this week.

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) noted that measures like this could reduce collisions by 30% and save 25,000 lives across Europe over the next 15 years.

The details of how alcohol meters will be integrated into cars are not yet known. However, some systems are known to require repeated breath tests at random intervals to prevent drunk drivers from asking a friend to start the car.

In addition to these alcohol meters other "safety mechanisms" have also been approved and will soon be part of the legislation.

Of all the measures, it highlights the fact that vehicles manufactured from 2022 will have to include a speed limiter as well.

Rózà Thun, MEP, said that a kind of “speed limiter” was the most controversial measure. However, she clarifies that: “We did not introduce a speed limiter, but an intelligent system that will make drivers fully aware when they are speeding. This will not only make all of us safer, but also help drivers to avoid speeding tickets.”

What do you think about these new safety features?

Do you think mandatory breathalysers and speed limiters are a good or bad thing?

Actually we should be having zero alcohol when driving and what about drugs they impair judgement too

I think this would be worthwhile only if it was connected to the police, because some people are aware that they are over the limit yet still drive

Too many 'coulds' and 'mays' in there for my tastes, it "could reduce collisions by 30" which nothing really. I think this is a sledgehammer to crack a nut, it seems to me a more effective method is one of education and making drinking and driving socially unacceptable, which I think it already is in the UK. I'd be interested to know which countries are main culprits because I'm pretty sure those numbers are not evenly spread across all European countries. Also if it's doing 'random checks' while you're driving isn't that just as distracting as using a mobile phone, or is the car just suddenly going to cut out or have a forced stop for you to check again.....I can't imagine how much chaos that would cause, or how many accidents that would lead to, it's not always practical or safe to just stop.

I think this is a good idea, especially for the morning after.

Another expensive gadget that won’t help

There is always a way around technology.

This will be good for the average person who has one or two beers and is not sure whether they are over the limit or not

Wow what a great idea. I'm for anything that makes driving more safe. Hope it's foolproof and drink drivers don't find a way to override the breathalyser

Good idea but will be circumvented by the unscrupulous people.

It is a nice feature, however there is always a way to bypass this gadget
