What would you consider to be the longest acceptable distance for a diversion, 10 Miles, 20 Miles, how about 69 Miles ?
Closed

The M2 is being closed for resurfacing work again this weekend, and the diversion put in place by highways England is 69 miles long ! Traffic is being sent down to Dover to pick up the A20, then to Folkestone to pick up the M20. One flaw in the plan is that the M20 has work on it putting a smart motorway in place. Last weekend this area was gridlocked by a similar closure of the M2. I am going out on a duty 15 miles away on Sunday, so the drive to, and from it should be fun for me.

Do you think a 69 mile diversion is acceptable ?

ive beaten that with about 89 miles, roughly, my ex once drove me over the hardknott pass in the lake district, absolutely terrifying experience, much better on a bike i imagine, so i made him drive the only other way back to where we were staying, 89 miles along the coastline, no way was i going back the road we came lol x

That's not good, Chris ~ do you have a bike ?
Some diversions in Scotland must be longer than that when they've got floods or a landslide ~ they don't have a lot of interconnecting roads !

That’s definitely not acceptable, I am sure they could have found a shorter route

I used to live on Kintyre due to landslides at the rest and be thankful on the a82 there were regular diversions which I seem to think varied between 60-90 miles long, not what you want when your coach takes over 4 hours anyway, the extra mileage ontop is just pants if you need to get somewhere.

We were once diverted from the A34 from Newbury to Southampton and it took us through pitch black woods in the middle of the night ! Bit scary. Plus a lot of extra fuel for the car and trailer. Unfortunately no other options were available. Who works out these diversions ? And why no warning until we were at the junction where we were diverted ?
