Sotheby's Auction House sold

I was very surprised to hear this news, of such a famous institution.

Sotheby's auction house was sold for $3.7 billion (£2.9 billion) !!
The establishment was founded in 1744.

Billionaire Art Collector Patrick Drahi in a $3.7 billion deal that restores the auction house to private ownership after 3 decades on the stock market.

Drahi, a media and telecoms entrepreneur is a 55 year old French-Israeli businessman who lives in Switzerland.

Have you ever been to an auction house, or attended an auction sale ?

The American owner sold to to the French, who also own Christies all the great British Institutions are value far more highly by foreigners than us.
I used to visit Sothebys about every month on business but not for auction purposes and it was chock full of characters and many merry lunches at local Curry houses are fondly remembered.

I used to love going to auctions - not at big, fancy auction houses like Sotheby's, but more like the ones on Bargain Hunt. Reply

I sold a dining room table and chairs by auction but I didn't actually attend. When the lady rang me to tell me how much it had sold for, and I swear this true, she said...
"Would you be happy if I told you it sold for £300?" I replied, "I was hoping for a little more". She went on, "Well, what if I said it sold for £400 then?" I was a bit happier with that, until finally she said "Well, good news it actually sold for £500"
It was just like being there, NOT !
