Back to School

We have Christmas starting in August, Easter eggs and hot cross buns on sale from January and now Back to School before the summer term is barely half over. I just heard an advert on the radio urging parents to buy their children's new school uniforms now, offer ends on 2nd July. Quite apart from the fact that we are still two or three months away from the new school term surely the retailer must be aware that summer is the time when children are likely to put on a massive growth spurt so the uniform that fits them this week could be a couple of sizes too small by the time the new school year starts.
When I was young the new uniforms were always bought in the last week of August or first week of September, just before the new term started. If you have children when do/did you buy their new uniform?

All commercially driven. Agree with the summer growth spurt. Remember buying shoes for our youngest three weeks before then end of term and being shocked to find he needed new ones to start in September, had brown by two sizes. We joked that it was because he had spent most of the summer on the beach barefoot. Reply

Usually a last minute panic, around the last week of August, involving an intense, fraught, hugely stressful visit to Marks & Sparks on the bus, of which we subsequently agree never to speak of again! Reply

I'm sure this tactic is just used to cause a surge in sales... to keep the shareholders happy! Reply

I went to town this morning and there were deals on school uniforms. I don't have children but my nieces don't get their new uniforms until nearer the time of going back. Reply

Good morning Minnie.. To be honest, I cannot really remember all the different times I had different school uniform sizes, as I attended more than 7 schools with all my travelling... Reply

If they have good offers on then I'll probably buy a couple of things in the next size up but I think most people don't even think about it until mid August! Reply

I think it's a marketing ploy : they know that those poor fools who fall for the supposed 'discounts' will still end up spending more, because even if the uniforms are bought a size larger now the children will grow out of them that few months sooner. I wonder when schools will catch on to the football club scam of changing their uniform every year? Reply
