ERNIE has been upgraded...
Closed

NS&I (and their Premium Bonds) have taken a quantum leap with a new random number generator, ERNIE 5. This is the first time in 15 years that ERNIE has been upgraded, with ERNIE 4 retiring to the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park.

ERNIE 5 (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment No. 5) will now use quantum technology to produce random numbers. The first ERNIE was the size of a van; ERNIE 4 was no bigger than a DVD player; ERNIE 5 is even smaller (the size of a pea) but so much faster!

ERNIE 5 will sift through the 79 billion premium bonds in existence to produce 3 million winners in just 12 minutes each month! This is about 21,000 times faster than the original ERNIE from 1956... The current ERNIE 4 takes about 9 hours to do the same job!

Since they first began operating in the late 1950s, the five ERNIES have generated the numbers for more than 432 million prizes totalling £19.2 billion and have created 406 millionaires!

I am hoping that ERNIE 5 will find my numbers when picking the £1 million prize winners! Fingers crossed!

Did you know that ERNIE stands for Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment? Some people still believe it was named after Ernest Marples - he was the Postmaster General that gave the go-ahead for the first premium bond prize draws!

I've had some for more than twenty years, only one once in all that time. This last month? I won five lots of £25! Never expected that!

I do hope that it finds our numbers. My hubby has 5 premium bonds from the first month of release. His grandparents bought a few of them for when the grandchildren popped along. It's older than he is.. On the downside - it's never won a jot but hey ho. One day...

I did know that and remember Ernest Marples as a one time Minister for Transport, well fitted for the role as he could not drive, nothing much changes in Toryland.
