Do you think we should do away with first class compartments on trains?
Closed

Certainly around me at off peak times they are always empty - the only people I see in there are off duty guards or drivers. Or do you enjoy the quietness and solitude of a first class seat/compartment? At peak times I see a few more seats occupied but I suspect nearly all of those are paid for by employers not individuals. Maybe we should go the other way and have 2nd and third class with no seats but cheaper prices?

There should be no first class and if there is the whole train should be first class, so everybody can enjoy the comfort.

It does seem rather ridiculous to have 3 carriages packed out and 1 with maybe 7/8 people sitting in comfort with all that space and the price difference seems daft ...!

I always see a few people in 1st class, like you say though, they have probably been paid by their employer as I am not sure anyone would pay the extra and it is not really worth it. I can't see them having a third class where you stand for your journey as they would loose out on major money, as in peak times a lot of people have to stand anyway due to over crowding.

Probably the prices of the tickets for the first class must be lower. In this case, it won’t be empty seats.

Being retired, I no longer have the daily commute into Central London - but on our SouthEastern line we have never had First Class Compartments, so the chance of a First Class Seat would be a fine thing, irrespective of the extra cost! In fact, although I usually got a seat for the journey into town, I usually had to stand most of the way home... Especially after SouthEastern, in their wisdom, replaced a lot of their rolling-stock with "London Tube Style Carrieages" to allow more comfort for those people who were standing! (Running longer trains, with more carriages, did not seem to occur to them!) At least I've got my Old Biddy TravelCard now so don't have to pay my fares (except if I need to travel before 9.30am, when the TravelCard takes effect).

I think disabled people and the elderly who cannot get a seat elsewhere on the train should be allowed to use the empty compartments.

Yes I travel all the time on Virgin and usually there are about 5 carriages on the train - 3 standard which are packed so you have to stand & 2 first class which are 90% empty.
