Abortion - agree or disagree?

Do you think abortion is acceptable? Do you think it shouldn't be allowed to happen? Do you think that it is necessary in todays culture? What are your opinions of it and why? Need some help for a religious education dissertation - would really appreciate your views :)

i think that it is bad in a way because you are snuffing out a life before it has had a chance to live, also i think it reflects negatively on the persons involved both man and woman because they couldnt control themselves in the 1st place

No, but some people feel that it is necessary due to the circumstances in which the child was conceived and sometimes, it IS necessary for health reasons. I agree that carrying the child to full term in cases of rape might be an idea, so that the child can be adopted. However, there has been news recently that less babies are being adopted in the UK. The likely reasons are that the over cautious social workers won't let babies go to people who tie their shoe laces the wrong way (Joke)

A tricky subject, but it has to be down to individual choice, it the unborn child is suffering form of ilness or disability then there is a case for termination where the quality of life is severly reduced, or if it is the result of sexual abuse or rape. If the baby is other wise healthy then I can see no reason for aborthin unless it affects the wellbeing mental and physical of the mother.

It very much depends on the circumstances, no one an tell you what to do, but we can help people with the choices that they make. If I woman is raped would that child be loved enough by the mother or would it be a constant reminder of the nightmare, if the child was going to be very disabled and therefore have a practically no quality of life. These factors have to be considered when a woman finds out she is pregnant. On the other hand a life is a life and for those of us to struggle to get pregnant and those who can't and want to, abortion is the worse thing in the world. A very difficult subject.

Hi there once again Holly this has to depend on the circumstances, but I do not think I could ever have brought myself round to having an abortion, I suppose if a person is raped or else they find out that there is something seriously wrong with the child I may just have considered it but otherwise I would not. People have a right to choose whether they have a baby or not but abirtion should never be used as an effective way of birth control This I find appalling Take Care cynth xx

Yes I agree it is up to the woman what she does with her body and there are circumstances when it is not right to bring a child into the world.

Have been liking the opinions coming in here but thought I'd add in my own opinion for anyone that wants to know :)...
I do not agree with abortion. I believe that if you feel you are responsible enough to have sex then you should be responsible enough to have a child. We all know that if you have sex you get pregnant, not all contraceptives are 100% and therefore you need to be considering this before you start having sex. The theory, "I'll use contraception but if it gos wrong I'll abort" feels completely unacceptable to me.
I believe it is a human beings life and if I was holding a baby infront of me nobody would say kill it. If the baby I was holding was disabled. Nobody would kill it. If the baby I was holding was born by a mother that wasn't good financially or was emotionally unstable. Nobody would kill it. I disagree that the baby isn't a baby until a certain point. If the baby I was holding was missing a leg nobody would kill it - even though it hasn't fully developed.
I sympathise with women who are raped and become pregnant. This is a horrible situation and in no way would I expect the mother to bring the child up. However, if I was holding a baby and said "this baby was brought into the world but a ad who raped her and mother that didn't want ot give birth to it due to being traumatised by rape". Nobody would kill it. Art the end of the day it isn't the babies fault and without meaning to sound brash, te world is a bad place and bad things happen but its how we deal with them that shapes us.
There are always other methods instead of abortion for those that do not want a baby. There is adoption - both open and private which is a fabuloys method. For those mothers that would say I don't want the baby but I couldn't give it up for adoption I feel that it is fairly selfish and it's very similar to when people kill their partners if a divorce is happening or something. Just completely wrong. I know that I could never have an abortion, even in rape and I know that I will definitely be adopting. "If mothers don't want their children don't abort them - I'll look after them". A wise old woman said this once and I will always try to live by it.
