On Thursday 24th April the National Union of Teachers have called a national strike to complain about their pay and many schools will be shut. While I can see their point that their pay is laughable, should they really be allowed to strike? Their problem is with the Government, but it is the parents and children who suffer from strike action. I have only had two days notice, and so arranging alternative childcare has been impossibl, as a consequence I am having to use a day of annual leave and other parents are losing a day's pay to look after their children. It is also disrupting the childrens' education at a time when teachers are insisting that even doctor's and dentists appointments are made out of school hours to avoid such disruption. So is this strike fair?

I will start off by stating that I do not agree with striking, but that is my personal opinion, but having said that everybody has the right to withdaw their labour when all other channels and negotiations have failed. I am an assessor, and I work with four local schools (where there are teachers striking) and I will be taking my students as normal. As I stated, I am against strike action, but I fully understand the reasons for this strike - Government promised a payrise but have reduced the % promised, and have not backdated it (as promised), unqualified teaching assistants are 'replacing' teachers in the class room, which enables class sizes to increase even further (and class size has a far greater impact on childrens education, than a one day strike ever will!), the increase in testing (SATS) which causes a lot of strees for teachers as well as rheir students), the increase in violence (there are now more teachers at risk of violence - from students and parents! - and in some cities this risk is higher than that of a Police Officer! GCSE students will not be affected - they have been 'issued' revision days (its up to them if they do this, and this occurs all the time before exams!) . When the schools are on 'holiday' it does not mean the teachers are - they have many jobs to do, such as marking and other adminiistration, course planning, learning plans for students, etc. There are currently more Teachers leaving their employment than any other sector - in many cases they leave due to stress, but also because they can sometimes earn more money for doing a less stressful job! It is unfortunate that there will be some other people affected by the strike, but there are always people affected when there is a strike - look at what has happened in the past with: fireman; miners; airrline; air traffic control; I will probably get a lot of negative feedback for my comments, but this is purely my opinion, formed from the facts as I know them.

personally there are other jobs which deserve high wages more ie soldiers fighting for our country. Another would be nurses they get peanuts for what they have to put up with. lifeboat and mountain rescues get no money what so ever, They rely soley on donations.

No not at all, they are vastly overpaid. People in vitally important jobs, such as nurses, care assistants, people who stay home to look after ill /disabled family member, shop and factory workers, bus drivers, receive a pittance for working long and arduous hours. It is a sign of the crazy times we live in when someone kicking a ball around is somehow considered more worthy of large financial reward, than the people who keep this country going, day in and day out. I think it is a disgraceful state of affairs and should be changed immediately.
