It seems the latest tax news is that we will all have to pay an additional tax to fund the governments universal service obligation. Thats to fund the moves to ensure every home in the UK has access to a "fast" 2mbp/s broadband link. Note although the speed may be quoted as 2mbp/s it can be as slow as 80kb/s if traffic network is high. So in effect it is not guaranteeing really fast service speeds.

The point though is that it appears a new tax is going to be put onto phone lines to pay for this.

We are years behind the infrastructure of Japan with regards to broadband and are starting to lag behind other countries due to bandwidth restrictions and traffic management during peak times. Indeed i will not have BT or AOL or one of the other providers as my internet service because not only do they use traffic management which slows you down and brings your internet speeds to a crawl during peak usage hours but BT also spies on you using software from Phorm.

I'm getting off the subject here which is about new taxes.

What do you think of the proposal to tax people who have the internet or a phone so that universal broadband can be brought in for everyone ?
