I mean, I think GCSE's are easier, definitely!
But AS / Alevels are definitely not.
There have been more and more people failing A levels, and more people passing GCSE's, and it's because of this massive jump between the 2 levels.
Take chemistry, or maths.
It's not like you can not teach the stuff in between the 2 levels to give more time to get the work done, you have to know everything.
But it's definitely true that the exams are different.
It's more about 'key skills', and applying skills and knoweledge to situations than it was years ago.
Plus, theres much more help given to students now.
At my old school there were lessons after school until 5 for people who were struggling, and anyone who was struggling HAD to attend them.
I think its more a case of teachers dont ignore failing students anymore.

Post your opinion!

(vinny246)

Education

High School

http://uk.toluna.com//people/vinny246

what was your fav subject at school?

http://uk.toluna.com/opinions/412969/what-your-subject-school.htm

http://uk.toluna.com/opinions/412969/what-your-subject-school.htm

my favourite subject was english.what was everyone elses favourite subject or didn't you have one?

English. In Bedfordshire which is the next county on from mone they still have lower, middle and upper schools.
In my area the have an infants, junior and senior school. Its a similar system but the juniors move to senior school in year 7 where as in Bedford they go to senior school in year 9.
I think our system is better because in the senior school they have two years to settle down before they start thinking about options. And though I may not have behaved exactly as a model student does, I never got into any serious trouble while I was there. This was mostly because I respected most of the teachers, was sufficiently afraid of the consequences of crossing a few of them, and had no real desire to be punished, just as 99% of my schoolmates felt.
Recently I had reason to go back to my old school, and found that the situation there was pretty dire. The police were called several times a week to deal with unruly students because the teachers could do nothing with them. A team of oncall staff were paged to remove children misbehaving in lessons and isolate them because the teachers were powerless to stop their behaviour.
The behaviour of these children was no different to when I had been there, though more were at it: some were caught smoking in the building, some were swearing at staff, others disrupting lessons... Yet the same teachers who would have given me a good bollocking if I'd done that, just stood by and said there was nothing they could do. What on earth has happened in those few years, both to teachers and to the behaviour of children, to get to this point?

Well I definately think the learning standards have slipped since I - Well I definately think the learning standards have slipped since I went to school over twenty years ago, I know some teens who cant read or spell properly, dont know what happened with the spelling tests and times tables we had to recite!!!! I think a lot of it has to do with lack of respect, and not enough disipline towards the young these days. I am not saying that they are all like this, but the schools have no power anymore and it must be really hard teaching the ones who literally dont really want to learn. I feel that the parents are to blame aswell for letting them behave like this and not caring enough to teach them some manners and respect. I used to be scared of most of my teachers and it wasnt a bad thing either. I am all for bringing back National Service, to teach some disipline and respect for others and themselves.

Post your opinion!

(littlewiggle)

Education

High School

http://uk.toluna.com//people/littlewiggle

Do you think that kids should stay in school until 18?
