Father Tim Jones, the parish priest of St Lawrence and St Hilda in York, said people should only steal from places with lax security as that will lessen the chances of being caught. Jones says people in desperate need may at times be justified shoplifting items from large chain stores.

“The Ten Commandments are actually quite vague on the specifics,” said Father Tim during his sermon.

“Any half decent lawyer will tell you they wouldn’t hold up in court. Legally speaking, they’re pretty much worthless.”

“So I implore you, if there is something you need this Christmas, something you absolutely must have. Then steal it. Just try not to get caught, and don’t tell anyone I told you to do it, as I’m only halfway through my own suspended sentence.”

But where do you draw the line - no more than 2 loaves of bread, 1 pound of sausages instead of 2 pounds, alcohol not allowed because that's not a necessity etc etc etc. Theft is theft is theft, full stop. I think it is a very sad day when a parish priest advises people to go against the teachings of the church and what he praeches to his flock!

I had to share this with you

The man, who is aged in his 20s, tried to steal the vehicle from Folletts Farm, near Bridgwater, Somerset. But he was disturbed by beef farmer Lance House, 50, and fell into a deep slurry pit as he fled through the darkness.
Four fire crews were called to the scene and spent one hour rescuing him from the excrement using ropes and specialist equipment.
The man, from Bridgwater, Somerset, was then arrested by police on suspicion of attempted theft of a motor vehicle and released on bail.
"We heard the tractor running late at night and found this lad reversing it across the yard who was high as a kite on drugs or alcohol," Mr House said.
''He jumped out while it was moving and ran off and then I was looking around and started hearing someone shouting 'Help, help.'
''I found him with a torch in the slurry pit. He had fallen in while running away and only his head was coming out of the slurry."
He added: ''I called the fire brigade and police. If we hadn't been there he would have died and that's not a nice way to go.
''They took about an hour getting him out of there with ropes.''
Christine Barnett, who also lives on the farm, revealed that the unnamed man had to be treated by paramedics after escaping the pit.
She added: ''I actually felt quite sorry for him - he was frightened to death. It must have been scary for him.
''While we were waiting for the fire brigade he was telling me how sorry he was and how he would never do it again. He really was up to his neck in it.''

I seen the flashing blue lights..very familiar. The fire brigade seem to turn up at our tower every few weeks and always on a saturday night. 2 fire engines out the back & the high riser turned up as we are a gas tower with 17 floors. They went in with their oxygen packs on and came back out 2mins later like they always do. No one stuck in the lifts.. no fire? A few weeks ago 4 engines turned up and went 10mins later and i still dont know why..yes im nosey but when you are in a gas tower its incredibly dangerous if there is a fire! So it has most likely been a false call to the fire brigade which is totally uncalled for. It costs them £500 each call out and people doing that is potentially putting someone elses family at risk if there is a real fire.
Last year, towers just up the road from us were on ITV news following constant call outs from idiots in the tower who proceeded to launch bottles and ashtrays at firemen when they tried to enter the tower.. what kind of people do that? One firemen was seriously hurt and ended up in hospital. It is essential that they respond to the call out. it is so unfair and selfish of people doing this and needless to say they did find out who it was eventually and they were done for it. I just hope that they could live with themselves if they prevented the firemen getting to a house where a family were living that are killed. Makes me sick
