Personally I believe in the right environment it's ok, apart from the associated health problems it can cause. Used correctly it's no worse than drinking alcohol.

I live in the South West and our wages are way below the national average. This would be ok to live except for the fact that the cost of living is the same as anywhere else in the country, and increasingly on a par with london prices. The prices of our houses have risen to an astronomical level and rival any london price tag, yet our wages remain at the bottom of the scale. How are we then expected to buy our own homes and maintain the rising costs of them? This ensures that the majority of houses in the south west are snapped up by the wealthy as second homes and the local residents have to struggle to find houses for their families, sink further into debt to keep up with the prices, or forgoe completely the idea of owning their own homes.
If we have to live with the London price tag, then we at least deserve to be given the London wage.
