Black pudding - urggh - congealed blood with lumps of fat in it. But Eccles cakes - mmmmmm! - haven't had one for yonks but always bought a pack of four that said Real Lancashire Eccles Cakes on the wrapper, they were wonderful. Lovely buttery puff pastry packed with currants ... champion! Talking of black puddings, anyone remember Ripping Yarns with Michael Palin? There was an episode called The Testing of Eric Olthwaite, whose mind-boggling tediousness forced his parents to run away from home. His mum would be stirring the black pudding mix and Eric would say: 'Black pudding's very black today, mother. Even the white bits are black.' Loved that line.

On Thursday 24th April the National Union of Teachers have called a national strike to complain about their pay and many schools will be shut. While I can see their point that their pay is laughable, should they really be allowed to strike? Their problem is with the Government, but it is the parents and children who suffer from strike action. I have only had two days notice, and so arranging alternative childcare has been impossibl, as a consequence I am having to use a day of annual leave and other parents are losing a day's pay to look after their children. It is also disrupting the childrens' education at a time when teachers are insisting that even doctor's and dentists appointments are made out of school hours to avoid such disruption. So is this strike fair?
