It would be better for there to be an open format, like DVD, and then it is licensed out to manufacturers like Samsung and Panasonic to make the consoles themselves. The only problem in this would be no equivalent of 'Xbox Live', with online gaming being more like the fractured (but free) PlayStation model. Market forces would keep the price of games stable - people are hardly going to fork over £70 per game these days, are they?
