At the time of writing I have received 633 opinion replies from other users, which made me think of the old war film "633 Squadron", from 1964. (The theme tune to which is now looping through my brain- you probably know it even if you don’t realise you do). It was about a bombing raid on a German V2 factory in Norway, with the squadron being led by a USA pilot who, like many other Americans, had registered as being "Canadian" in order to fly with the RAF. It emphasised the multinational aspect of the war effort in Europe, and whilst not the best acting, had some amazing aerial photography.
Apparently the trench scene from Star Wars was based on the flight along the narrow fjord in 633 Squadron.

In the last few months I have seen The Thin Red Line, an incredible film by Terrence Malick about the battle for Guadalcanal in WWII. Once actors heard he was returning to directing they were queuing up for roles and it features some stunning acting as a result. It is very sad, very hard-hitting and one of the best films I have ever seen in its expression of the utter horror of war.

I think war films serve a purpose, I don't think we should pretend these things don't happen, and I will continue to enjoy watching them as cautionary tales.
