Cull or not to cull

Cull or not to cull
cityskyblue
I have decided to write this opinion to try to guage opinions. There is a debate going on at the moment in regards to culling the grey squirrel due to it not being a native species of Britain. Grey squirrels were introduced to this country by man. This is repeated all over the world. Whenever man has introduced a animal into a another enviroment the consequences have been devastating. Same with the grey. All though it may look cute and very photogenic it is widely accepted that it is responsible for the threatened extinction of the native red squirrel. If we were to cull the grey it is believed it would help the red. But my question is this do we have a right to keep playing god with natiove wildlife all over the planet.

If a species is indangering another species and it was introduced by us then I personally think we should cull, often we introduce animals into an environment and because it has no natural predators in that new environment it breeds with check and mucks up the food chain and the ecology. Provided the culling is done humanely and only to the point that is required then I dont see any problem. Historically though we can sometimes cull animals to the point of extinction and then after the fact realise we have gone too far so I think it needs to be researched and strong guidelines around what numbers they need to achieve and then have an ongoing basis of research about numbers.

Nature does it's own culling in the wild so why can't we as men (broad sense of the world ) cull problem species,i would be up for eating squirrel,i have eaten wood pigeon in a restaurant, there wasn't much on it but it was nice,i saw a bloke on tv that only eats meat that is road kill, obviously he gets it tested by a vet in case it is infected and also it can't be too damaged ,he made a meal out of road kill for a pub and most people turned their noses up,but if they were starving they would eat it,there are a lot of animals that eed to be culled that we could eat.We should start a petition to be able to cul and eat certain problem animals

I agree that grey squirrels can be photogenic and cute but they are also responsible for eating baby birds and ring barking trees so their destructive influence is not only limited to their impact on the Reds. If we did cull them there is no guarantee that the Red Squirrels would recover and repopulate the country but at least we would have tried. I like the idea of grey squirrel meat now being available to eat as that is a practical rather than wasteful way of dealing with them, although I can't see that you get much meat off of them. Didn't Elvis used to eat squirrel meat as a child? As for playing God sometimes we need to rectify our mistakes of introducing animals/plants into other environments otherwise they may run amock - like cane toads in australia. I think if a problem has been created by humans we have a responsibility to try to make things better. We are still constantly introducing things so maybe there should be more emphasis on non introduction by man. Sometimes non native species can travel by themselves accidentally, eg hotentot figs by sea, do we also try to remove these?

We should leave nature alone, every time we interfer with nature we usually live to regret the decision. It is plain that 'God knowa besr'. if we keep interfering what sort of world will be left for future generations?

I believe it Should be the duty off all Country's to protect their flora and Fauna, We tackle this issue seriously In Australia, we have a serous problems with Cane toads over here, IN fact were losing the battle. Some bright spark had the idea that introduction of this pest would be useful to eradicate the cane betel, he was right but it has caused the extinction of several species of indigence wild life and has no predator due to the amount of the toxic poison it continually secretes. we also have to cull the numbers of Kangaroos, I no it sounds cruel but they breed in prolific proportions, so we must control the numbers to ensure there is food resources for the rest of the buggers. We also cull Feral cats if this creature numbers grew to great we Would soon see more many more of our Fauna placed on the endangered list, as they will kill for pleasure and are the perfect hunting predator, so I believe the simple fact of the mater is we must be cruel to be kind to protect the indigenous wild life of our prospective Country's.
