Recently we have heard in the news of a worker being bitten by a rabid dog immported from Sri Lanka. Should we be importing these animals as this incident shows the dangers involved. What is even more disturbing is that this week the RSPCA anounces that record numbers of animals are being abandoned.
I have always had misgivings about animals being allowed into the UK and I DO know of irresponsible people who have managed to smuggle in cats and dogs from countries like Turkey, Greece and Thailand where they have rabies. Until they really tighten up the laws and stop being pressured by the liberals who want everything to be open and easy, we will continue to hear of these sorts of cases. I can tell you from 1st hand experience that having rabies shots is without any doubt, the most painful experience anyone can have. I got nipped by a dog in West Africa in 1967 (it turned out to have rabies). As a precaution I was given 21 injections (every 3rd day) in my stomach area. I have blotted out the agony of the treatment but my parents told me that i really suffered. I wouldnt wish that on anyone. Apparently that treatment is still done and WAS done a few weeks ago.
All this story proves is that Quarantine is doing it's job properly, so I don't see any need to ban the import of animals so long as quarantine procedures are effective.
