I think that in all probability crime rates in the uk have not went up that much. I think that more crimes are reported due to increased policing and how easy it now is to report a crime. Crimes like burgalary and car theft have in fact gone down according to reports, people are more likely to report these due to insurance, whereas violent crimes (reported) have gone up. does this balance out? do you really think people today are that bad and we live in a crime epidemic as reported so often by the media? (This is part of an essay Im having to do, Ive to get other peoples thoughts too! so no stupid answers please lol)
they've definately gone up and in my opinion will continue to do so untill the government gets off its backside and does something about it once and forall
definatley UP! my mum always said years ago you would never have had to lock your car or your home but now its different could never consider that now so there you go
As a per centage, per capita, I think that the overall crime rate has not moved very much, if at all. I think that there has been an increase in certain types of crime (carrying knives, carrying guns, general violence) but a drop in some others (theft, burglary), but I can only speak for the area in which I live. The media always seems full of crime, doom, and gloom, but they have a tendency to sensationalise. If the Government tells me that crime rates are down ,and detection rates and conviction rates are up, then my guess is that the oposite is true! I know that there are many people today 'scared' of crime, and many victims of crime, but I am not one (recently).
Depends I think violent crimes have gone up but petty crimes have actually come down. When you look at thugs and criminals their make up has changed and they are getting a lot meaner and a lot nastier now. You will always have criminals, unfortunatley I think that the problem is going to increase as children seem to be growing up with a complete lack of the concept of responsibility. Parents make excuses for them and let them run wild and they little sense of right or wrong, consequences for actions or onus of responsibility and unfortunately when it starts in a 5 year old it becomes a problem as teenager and it becomes societies issue as an adult. Start addressing the kids and some of the parenting or lack of it and it will do more to protect our future than reviewing prison sentences or increasing police numbers.
I THINK THE CRIME RATES HAVE SOARED IN THE PAST 20 YEARS,SENTENCES FOR DEFENDANTS ARE FAR TOO LENIENT AND PRISONS ARE MORE LIKE HOLIDAY CAMPS THAN PLACES OF PUNISHMENT.
The crime rate in this country is rising. Don't believe the crime figures you read in your papers, they are not right. Violent crime is on the increase as is theft and burglary. The more our population rises the more crime there will be. There are fewer Police Officers on the streets now than there ever has been, ok there are now PCSO's but what good are they? They are a waste of time, it is Policing on the cheap. They don't have the powers to deal with crime like real Officers do.
Crime rates in this country are probably about the same as they have always been. I agree with cara that more are probably reported now, especially as to claim on your insurance you have to have a police report to prove the fact. I do think that our perception of crime has increased though. With a much broader media, with news ever present, crime sells. The news media is always casting around for something to fill their programmes and pages and bad news seems to get higher figures. Studies have shown that the rates for child abductions has changed very little from when I was a child, but now the awareness of it is far greater and children are being more carefully watched than ever. A good example is that inner city London is often portrayed as being a violent place full of stabbings, gun ctime and drugs. Yet I have never experienced any of this despite living next to a large and poor council estate.
