Did you used to have a Sunday "cake tea"?

Did you used to have a Sunday "cake tea"?
Tk132
Reading Yowzers previous opinion about cakes & biccies from the past has made me think about Sunday tea at my house growing up. We always had a Sunday lunch every week without fail, then our Sunday tea would consist of a sandwich (normally made with meat leftover from the Sunday joint) and CAKES. There was always French Fancies, something by Mr Kipling a Kit Kat or a Penguin, a slice of madiera cake for the grown ups, my mum would sometimes make a Victoria Sponge as well. How unhealthy is that? I can't imagine eating that many cakes in a week now let alone one sitting. Was this the norm at anyone elses house or was it just my mum trying to turn us into the fat family?

Yes we did when I was growinig up. We'd have a Sunday lunch then later in the late afternoon or early evening we'd have sandwiches and cake, which my mother had bought specially for Sunday tea

We used to have Sunday pie. Every Sunday when I was a kid lunch on Sunday was a mince pie, mashed potato and garden peas while we watched the soccer then Pot Black. Really looked forward to it. And then everytime someone has a birthday we had whitebait patties with crepes and maple syrup, sugar and lemon. Its funny but I can almost visualise both of these. I think those little traditionals really stick with you as your grow up and are a great thing to do with kids.

Hiya tk, am glad to hear from you as you havent been around much lately and i have missed you. Sunday tea? i think it may have died out a bit now, but back in the fifties, sixties, it always happened. Maybe it was/is more a Northern thing? we had sunday dinner and then Sunday tea, it was the only time in ours that there were cakes in the house, a box from Sayers,(just one cake each) and i always had a jelly cream. In my Nans house, now there was always lots of cake, both home made and shop bpught, but my Nan was funny with us...her other grandchildren were much older, so i think she was a bit fed up by the time we came along, and crabby with arthritis, and when we had sunday tea at hers, she always gave us the stale cakes!! on gorgeous crockery! Used to enjoy Sunday afternoons though, watching a film on my Nans tiny tv, then when Father Knows Best came on, the stale cakes would get trundled out for us! I am sure there must have been sarnies as well but i cannot recall them.

Yes, cakes were for Sunday tea..... & I lived down south in Essex then so not just a northern thing. Usually it was mum's homemade 'sponge' & she still makes a mean cake bless her! You had to eat sandwiches first & sometimes we'd have jelly instead of cake but had to eat it with our bread & butter. We'd have madeira or angel cake (I still like the end slice on the rare occasion that we have them now) I remember my cousin coming to stay for a week & we were showing off as to what we could eat. We spread peanut butter on the madeira & pretended to like it. When it was our birthday, mum always bought finger rolls. She'd cut them in half lengthways & arrange the halves around the plate like wheelspokes - on paper doilies of course! They all had cheese spread on & alternate ones would have a half slice of tomato at either end (I liked tomato & my brother didn't). Mum always made our birthday cakes.
