No, i went to a very good grammar school and i feel there is still a need for them to cater for the most academic children. Many conmprehensives have to leave the cleverest kids to sink or swim as they are busy trying to get the slower ones through exams - but they love having clever children there, as they bump up the figures when ofsted come calling. Clever kids need to be at schools that can stretch them and get the best from them, and less academic kids need reassuring that they are just different, not bwtter or worse than their more academic peers - they can be a lot more practical, better at art or sport or music - everyone has their weak and strong points.
