So the Government has decided that we have too many Post Offices to be economically viable and have decided to close them in their thousands. But is that fair on us the consumers? My mother now has to walk three miles just to buy a stamp, which means that she now has trouble doing alot of her daily business because she simply can't walk. And what about all the (mostly elderly) people, especially in rural areas, who rely on the Post Office for their money, banking services and bill payment. With banks pulling out of these areas surely it is up to the government to make sure that these people are not cut off from modern life.
I don't want to see local POs go, but I'm quite happy to pay bills and bank online. I also buy postage online now, most of the time. I'm not sure what will happen to my local post office. I suspect it will be closed, but I do hope not for the sake of those who need the service and can't easily get to the next town.
It's a changing world, and unfortunately the Post Office is suffering because of it. With online banking, Direct Debits and other such things it is increasingly difficult for the Post Office to make any money, so cut backs have to be made somewhere. I think maybe more thought should be put into which Post Offices close though, we have 4 in my town and that could easily be cut down to 2 with out any major issues.
