I gave it a go last year. My Mum died when I was 13, my Dad when I was in my 20's and I realised I didn't actually know that much about my family history.
I found out that my Mums Mum wasn't really her Mum but her Granny. Her real Mum was the woman she thought was her sister and there was no father on the birth certificate. (sounds like an old Eastenders plot!)
I traced my Dads family back to the early 1800's but didn't find anything overly exciting so I got bored with it but am thinking about giviing it another go.

My grandad researches the family history, he's done loads of his family tree which is my mums side of my family. He even did a little bit on my dads side. I'd like to continue it on my dads side when I get a bit older. It's very interesting and I love knowing where I come from

We've only gone back to the 1870s. I've got all the old family photographs (mums family) and she's written down as much as she knows or remembers which my daughter has put on a family tree. My dad's done his going back about the same distance but I haven't really gone into his side much as they weren't close to us. My mum did let slip about a family member who had died, 'her husband killed her, you know and he went to prison' but that only came out a little while ago and nobody else had heard that or mentioned it before to us. Perhaps that could stand a little more research, if we ever get around to it. I'm not that overly interested to find out, I'm more interested in the recent past and the relatives I could have known if it hadn't been for the war or other accidental deaths.

I have never really tried it. In my current family history my mum and dad were related to some local villians and so i do not know what i would find if i traced farther back :)
