I have been offered a better job in another department at work and have accepted, as a result my boss has signed me up for two courses with the Open University the first starting in June this year. I'm excited about my new position and also about gaining new qualifications but i'm unsure about home learning! I'm worried that without the conventonal classroom scenario that i'm used to, i'll be easily distracted (by toluna etc lol) and won't put the hours in!! Has anyone had experience of home learning or do you know anyone who has? Any info will be greatfully recieved! Kazz :]
I agree with juliapentle. I have done home learning and its good, if you have the time. it is hard to balance work and study but the good thing is its not full time and if you are reasonably organised its fine
It would work for me because I don't have time to attend classes and I'm not really into the whole 'being in a club' thing anyway. I was never a student in the traditional sense and it suited me to do it that way. You do need to have application though to learn in your own time.
Congratulations on the new position and gaining qualifications!
I did home learning with the OU and thoroughly enjoyed it. There's a calender of what you should be doing each week and a forum for everyone on your course and you discuss that weeks tasks with the other members so it makes sense to do it that week and you can check it on your calender. Some though not all courses have an online learning wizard which is supposed to help but I just found utterly confusing and did loads better with just the forums and calender.
Also, if you find you don't concentrate as well when reading large parts of text on the computer you can order them in paper form free of charge which take a week or so to be delivered. For me it was definately worth doing as I like to have the paper copy, make notes, highlight important bits etc.
Home learning is great - if you hasve the commitment. I did my BSc with the OU as illness made me housebound. They were fantastic, really helped me to cope with the work....and believe me it is work! You do need to put the hours in. But you will have a personal tiutor to help, and you do communicate with other students too! Good Luck!
