Has anyone tried tomatoes sprinkled with sugar? Yes I know it does sound a bit strange, thats what I thought when I was told about it a few years ago but when I tried it I found it delicious. Cut a tomato in half and sprinkle about half a teaspoon of sugar on it and enjoy. Over the years I have suggested this to quite a few people but never got anyone to try it so i'm hoping that you good folks will give it a go and let me know what you think. If you like it then I've given you a new taste sensation, if you don't then give me a not useful vote and I'll go away and sulk.
I don't like raw tomatoes only cooked so I haven't done this myself although I'm trying to persuade myself, although I do put a bit of sugar in my tomato sauces. My gran used to do this all the time. She's the only person I've ever known to do this but obviously there are people out there who do so she's not alone and she did it with good reason. I'll have to tell my dad as he never understood her doing it and thought it was really weird. He's not really one for raw tomatoes so never tried it either. My mum likes them with salt on. I shall put your comments to her
Actually I already have tried in the past. The sugar does enhance the flavour of the tomatoes and as Scuffsy puts it, it nearly tastes of strawberry. Tomato is a fruit after all. I always add a little sugar to my tomato sauces because it helps develop their taste and goes really well with pasta. When I make tomato salad, I sprinkle a little sugar and then a few drops of balsamic vinegar on sliced tomatoes and that is just heaven.
Yum yum yum. I can't believe no-one's ever suggested that to me before. Like all good scientists, I had a control - the unsugared half of the tomato, which I tried first, and it tasted as I expected. Then I tried the other half with sugar sprinkled over it, and it was delicious. Thank you very much for exposing me to this delightful way to eat a tomato! I'd read scuffsy's and zizi's comments and didn't really think the strawberry flavour would appear but it did. Very impressed.
You're in luck. I had three, just three poor little tomatoes left of those that survived the great pestilence this summer :-) So, being an open-minded soul, I have just sacrificed one in the name of science. And do you know what, you are right. It was very nice. First taste was almost of strawberries, how odd. And then a heightened savoury taste afterwards. That was a very pleasant diversion, thank you.
You wouldn't *really* have sulked would you, big boy like you?
