I think nowadays there are enough alternatives that we dont need to kill animals for food anymore. Many studies have found that it is actually healthier being a vegetarian as you get the required nutrients but without the fat from meat and of course the rubbish they put into processed products.
I don't think there is any need to kill animals to get meat. There is plenty of vegetarian stuff in supermarkets today with all the vitamins and stuff we need. I don't eat red meat, not when you see all the little lambs in the fields. Most of the packet meat has added water and rubbish put in it anyway. I only eat chicken and fish and buy quorn stuff, its really nice and tasty, its suprising what you can buy and its not that expensive.
I gave up eating meat 25 years ago and honestly don't miss it. I don't miss the taste and I certainly don't lack any essential nutrients as I try to eat a balanced diet. Even my 6 year old daughter has stopped eating meat and she definately still eats very well. My family all seem to think that if you do not eat meat that you lack vital vitamins but that is definately not true. A vegetarian diet is so much healthier without all the cholesterol found in meat. We still eat dairy produce but no meat at all. Quorn is brilliant and beans and lentils are full of fibre, protein and vitamins.
I did actually decide to become a vegetarian at the age of 22 that was a good 'mumble mumble '... years ago.
I managed to keep it up for two years, but felt dreadfully unwell after a while. I took what I needed supplement wise, but that didnlt help very much at all!
I visited my GP who said, OK, start eating meat again. vegetarianism isn't for everyone. I looked so pale.
Once I started eating meat again, within weeks I felt really good and fit, got my mojo back and some colour in my cheeks.
I also know of others who have been effected the same way, it just doesn't suit them. others can adapt to that kind of lifestly with no problems whatsoever.
I eat mostly lean white meat. Lots of fish! Which I love, especially Sushi.
I really love vegetables and eat mostly veg when eating a meal with a small portion of meat.
We require meat for the certain nutrients and minerals that it contains and that is why we ate it throughout history, not just because we enjoy killing animals and eating them.
If we cut meat out of our diets we have to specifically take steps to replace the lack of iron etc in our other food so that would imply that on a basic level meat is a base requirement for our health and removing is a choice thing rather than being a natural evolutionary step.
Personally I eat little meat myself but I have to take vitamins and minerals as a replacement and only cut it back due to meat causing IBS for me, I still love nothing more than a large rare steak and every now and then crave it which suggests that my body is needing it.
