Do we live in a morally defunct world where the super rich can design their own babies and have no one that they will listen to to tell them that it is wrong? or am I just behind with the times and should welcome the ability to choose various aspects of a baby and that this will lead to a better world?
But even the none rich have a certain amount of means to design a baby, we have amnios to tell us if the child has any faults or abnormalities so that we can decide if we wish to continue with the pregnancy.
I don't see anything wrong with someone being able to increase their chances for certain characteristics or traits if they can, provided ...... that they don't then turn around and abandon or put up for adoption a child that doesn't meet their ideal mental image.
We breed pets with this same ideal in mind by crossing different breeds of dogs, how is it any less horrific?
I think it is just advancement of the human race and provided that we don't develop any feelings of superiority in these people who is hurt? Maybe I am just naive.
i agree these days people dont have the same standards and morals i dont think people should be able to choose the sex of their baby and be able to buy anything regardless whether it is right or wrong
There are organisations that set limits, in this country the HFEA. And it is not yet possible to actively choose most of the traits that you refer to in your poll on the same subject. Most parents who ask for prenatal genetic diagnosis are those who already have one or more children affected with a terminal genetic disorder such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and certain other X-linked disorders. DMD boys rarely survive much into their 20s, it is always ultimately fatal, and for the parents in question this is their attempt at bringing a life into the world that will not be cut short early by an avoidable disease. Whether this is right or not is not for me to say, but your fears regarding true "designer" babies are not founded at this stage. I can say that I am opposed to sex selection for anything other than avoiding X-linked disease, and creation of babies as "saviour" donors to treat existing siblings.
