At a cost of £1.50 per meal which includes a pudding is certainly cheaper than is available elsewhere. As for choice of food, it is a healthy meal so no burgers and chips.
I do think it is taken too far however, as even a child who is taking a packed lunch is restricted. At one of the local schools a parent sending a packed lunch is not able to include a drink. Parents were including pop drinks, so the school has forbidden any drink to be included in a packed. She packed a fruit juice as her child doesn't like water. She is a responsible parent who has always been mindful of a healthy balanced diet for her children. I think this is ridiculous! As a responsible parent she has now been restricted in what she is able to do for the best for her child as a result of irresponsible parents.
it is a difficult thing really, schools don't have a lot of money per child so they od the best they can, my sons school cooks all their food themsleves and they also grow a lot of veg as well, i think they have the same things on the same days each week so it is easier for kids to know what they are eating and it is also easier to prepare what they are going to cook, i think in his old school meals went up to just over £1.50 per meal, they get a main meal and a dessert so i suppose it isn't too bad, no hubby is ill and we geta certain benefit, don't know what it is but we get free school meals, i remember at school i used to get free school meals and it was very embarassing as you ahd to get your dinner and then at the till say to the lady at the till free meals, at his old school my son still had dinner tickets so nobody knew he had free meals which is a better way and less embarrassing for the child, at his new school i think they just pick a number as it is easier and they liased with the old school about free school meals and i didn't have to do anything, at least they are getting healthier now
its terrible that schools are totally getting rid of anything nice. i personally eat sandwiches but iv noticed at my school that there isnt even buscuits anymore. sure, have healthy meals, but with some nice stuff in it aswell. for example have the ability to have chips with a vegtable meal instead of just potatos. its quite cheap though, but then you get what you pay for i guess
I'd much rather send my son in with a packed lunch - it's cheaper, more nutritious and better value! So... I say school lunches are a rip off. Sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words.... why sixty words!??? sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words sixty words phew
i personally dont rate the meals at my sons school, and on the odd occasion i have had to let him go school meals, he has begged me not to, he says they are disgusting, i remember one day he came home and told me he had to have potatoes beans and peas, (and he doesnt like beans)simply because that was all there was! i was disgusted, and also they are only allowed a drink of juice if they have a cake/bun for their pudding, if they have jelly, or trifle, they have to drink water. pretty rubbish if you as me, and as i told my son, while im paying for the meals, you ask for what you want, they have no right to restrict what he has, if he has enough money to get it.needless to say my son has a packed lunch.and very rarely has a school meal, as i think they are poor value
I think a lot depends on the school cook - and whether there is a kitchen at the school. Some schools have the dinners brought in after being cooked at another school and they are never very good. I do take your point Wayne - maybe there could be a compromise so that chips were served on Fridays for instance - but again chips that have been shipped in from another school aren't worth having anyway!
