Can you spell? I have asked this question because I have noticed so many people on this site have a very bad grasp of spelling English words. I remember when I was younger I really did struggle with reading and spelling and eventually I spent weeks by myself going back to the basics and relearning English. I am certainly not perfect myself and sometimes cringe when I look back at some of my opinions on this site when I notice a spelling mistake. But I just wonder why so many people find spelling so difficult.
I can spell although I am sure if you check through my opinions I will have made loads of mistakes. This is partly to do with the fact that I type too fast and don't concentrate on the spelling (miss letters, reverse order etc) and partly because I am too idle to check through and correct my spellings. However, some posts do make me cringe, mainly the ones wth no capital letters after full stops! Then again as long as its redable who cares this is an opinions site not an englsh exam!
For the most time, yes. My spelling has deteriorated a bit since I left school because of spell checking. I also find that now I can nearly touch type, I often end up misspelling a word or two, or replacing their with there which I never used to do. A lot of people on this site also appear to struggle with grammar and punctuation. Texting and email has made people lazy - we used to communicate primarily through letters, but those are gone now, replaced by media in which your spelling doesn't appear to matter.
Hi Cynthia, I agree that a lot of people cannot spell and what's more don't seem to be bothered about it... English is my second language so sometimes I feel I had an advantage as when learning the language I had to pay extra attention to how the words were spelt and write them letter by letter at the very beginning. When I first arrived to UK I was somehow astonished at how people, and sometimes very educated!, cannot spell. It might be because spelling rules in Polish are so much more complicated than in English and I thought English spelling cannot be THAT hard for a native! I guess my spelling is pretty good but then again I love reading and have been studying/working with English for 17 years now.
I like to think that I am not too bad at spelling but the reason i think people spell incorrectly is because of the text language thats around now. It seems that people think it makes life easier to use shorter text language but I don't really bother so much with text language.
Hate bad spelling, I'm forever correcting people's spelling and it really annoys me when I see a professional website or similar with spelling mistakes!
