Is it right to take your child out of school for holidays?

Is it right to take your child out of school for holidays?
MandiNeary
I heard on the news today that some schools are going to fine parents £50 a day for taking their children out of school for holidays.
Some people cannot afford to go on holiday i suppose unless they go in low season. Some people are very limited as to when they can have holidays due to factory shut down periods etc.
I assume that some people take their children out of school just because they can.
What do you think about it? Is it wrong to take your child from school for maybe just one week a year.Should some leave be allowed or is fining the way to go??

that's what school holidays are for...seriously how do you expect kids to have a decent regard for education if a holiday is more important?

This is a difficult question to answer. I can see it from both sides. It is disruptive for schools to have children taken out of school at critical times but travel companies have to shoulder some of the blame as they almost double the price of holidays in the school holidays.

Sorry angararadstevens, strike this week isn't by teachers. It's support staff (ta's, cleaners, kitchen staff etc) so schools r off cos of health and safety reasons. But anyway. I completely understand ppl taking ch out of school but this is most definitely the fault of the holiday companies grr. But i dont think it is a good idea for ch to miss school - 2 weeks is a long time and it can be very disruptive for the child.

It is the child who suffers the most when removed from school. I had to keep putting off planned tests necessary for course completion due to several weeks when 'a student' was not in attendance, thus holding up the course for others and at extra cost because I had to keep spending time 'contingency planning' - so I would say, yes, the parents (and in one case the actual school!) should cover those costs that were borne by me. Your argument should be with those 'holiday people' (airlines, hotels, etc.) that charge more during 'The School Holidays' - but unfortunately that is down to supply and demand. The other way of looking at it is: would you like it if the class teacher went on their holidays in the middle of term, therefore leaving you to pay for childcare and educational needs, just so the teacher could enjoy a cheaper holiday? Thought not. There are so many Laws currently in place regarding 'parental rights' et al, that I am surprised that anyone has any difficulty planning a holiday around the 13 weeks of the year that schools are on holiday, especially when these dates are given 12 months (or more) in advance.

dont think its about if its right or not children benefit from holidays with family however prices sore in school holidays so dont blame anybody who takes their child away in term time u gotta do it when u can afford it

Not really. If you are just wanting to take a holiday then I am afraid that is what school holidays are for – it is not as though you do not get enough of them in the year! Yes, having all the schools off at the same time means that prices are higher but you can still take a cheap holiday even during the peak summer season. You should not be taking your child out of school for a day – when they should be learning – just to go off on holiday. If there is a genuine reason for it – for example, to visit a dying relative – and it is unavoidable then fair enough but it is inappropriate to do so just for fun.

Yes if their attendance level is good the rest of the year and they are working to there full potential.

I have taken my children out of school AFTER exams ...usually late June,up to break up time for the school holidays, overlapping into the summer break.I do not think there is anything wrong ..providing the school is willing to release the pupil, because it should be at the schools discretion.I have never had any objections...usually because the time after exams up to holidays is usually made up of school trips, sports days and no real learning.I only take them out for a week.If I go longer,it's into the holidays.

Magnius there is no law to say you cant take your child out of school. Each school has a different system in place. cliver have you thought about when teachers are going on strick like 2 days this week, when parents have to pay for childcare then, this is the second time in as many months that teachers have gone on strick. I do take my son out of school for holidays as yes the cost in school holidays is way too high. This is profit by the holiday companies and I can back this up as for instance petrol and staffing cost the same all year round. We have an apartment abroad and we used to rent it out, and yes we did get more in the school holidays but only a small amount, so this is down to the tour operators being greedy to make more profits. I was taken out of school for family holidays on the condition that I used to take homework for me, and I did do it, so not a major loss. My son is only 6 at the moment so not a major educational age such as GCSE or A Levels. Maybe we will review it once he goes to comprehensive but at the moment will continue to take him out of school. Our schools policy is they are allowed 2 weeks per achedmic year, we then take the rest of our family holidays in school holidays and begruge paying the extra.
